First off, if you’re not comfortable don’t do it. Although acting pushes boundaries, it’s not okay for a teacher to require something like that that you’re not comfortable with. If both you and the other actor are comfortable with that, then just really get into character and do whatever it is your character would do. Talk to the other actor about what they are and are not comfortable with. You can make a kiss look really “hardcore” without actually using tongue, just by moving your mouth and utilizing body language (where you put your hands, pelvis, legs, etc). Talk beforehand about what kind of contact both of you are comfortable with.

You’re definitely not the only one! Feelings of arousal (along with a physically aroused response—getting wet, feeling warmer in your genital region, etc.) can and often do occur in intimate situations even if you may not want sex or further sexual contact. Sometimes even cuddling or hugs can cause an aroused response for some people! For many people, the body’s natural response when they do something sexual (even as seemingly minor as kissing) is to become aroused. But just because your body reacts physically in “preparation” for more sexual activity doesn’t mean you have to “agree” with it—make sure you only do what feels comfortable and safe for you.

Also, it’s pretty common for attraction to a person to vary over time—just as your opinion of someone’s personality could change, so can your feelings of sexual attraction toward them. Often, sexual attraction to a person can depend on your current mood, their current mood, the situation you’re in, and countless other factors. So don’t worry! The time that you have a sore, and even the time when a sore starts forming is when you’re most likely to be able to pass cold sores. However, the virus does shed even when you don’t have a sore so it’s possible even if you don’t have a sore currently. It depends on a lot of factors, including your partner’s immune system. Really there’s not a lot you can do to prevent passing HSV-1 during kissing except to abstain from kissing when you know you’re about to have a sore or you currently have a sore but even then you’re only decreasing the risk, not eliminating it. This is why about 90% of the population has oral herpes because it is so easy to pass. So really, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. For all you know your partner may already have it since it can take years to get a sore. Just talk to your partner about the chances and see what they have to say.

I think that subtle direction can be good, like “can we kiss more gently?” or you can play a game like kiss how I kiss where he tries to mimic your kissing. Then you give him compliments when he does it well like, “I love it when you kiss me like that.” or “whenever you kiss me softly it’s so sexy.” things like that. If it continues be a little more firm like “I like it when you kiss me softly, sometimes your kissing can be a little harsh, but when you do it softly it feels really amazing” sandwich your firm direction between two compliments. Positive reinforcement works wonders.

FYSE: it depends on the country/state/Provence, but generally sexual assault is used as a blanket term for all violent sex offenses. Of course it’s up to the place to decide what constitutes “violent”. This is why it’s difficult to convict sexual assault that doesn’t involve penetration because for some reason penetration is deemed as violent when other acts aren’t. If there’s force involved like being held down or tied up or in other ways someone is incapacitated then it has a higher chance of being considered sexual assault. In the United States there is being more change on the federal level but the states still have a lot of power in conviction so some states are more progressive than others. A lot of people would consider any sexual invasion of personal space, touching inappropriately, kissing etc sexual assault but I don’t believe many laws would. We are getting the laws expanded in many places (it used to be only violent penetration was covered) but it is slow progress and still difficult to convict.

well the only STI that can be passed through kissing is herpes, which it’s pretty much impossible to get a correct diagnoses unless you or your partner actually has a cold sore they can get a sample from. So if you currently have nothing on your lip there’s not anything they can really test. There are STIs that can get passed through more casual sexual activity, mutual masturbation, frottage, oral sex, etc. so it is definitely a good idea to get tested early on. Just remember, like I said it’s difficult to test for herpes (and HPV) so you still need to use barrier methods. And offering to go together can help with the awkwardness.

I find I can “train” someone who doesn’t kiss the way I like it, using their reaction to my kiss. If they’re opening their mouth too wide, close yours. If they’re using their tongue the wrong way, do the right way on them.
Alternatively you could say something like “How about we try doing it this way?” or “I love it when you ____”.
